Opening paragraphThis year has not been kind to gardeners has it?. Too much rain, flooding and a
slow start to the growing season. This looks like being the trend in the future.
Our Annual Show in 2023 was affected by poor growing conditions so numbers
were down. This year’s show (comments later) showed little improvement. Will
we adapt what we grow and manage the challenges that climate changes
throw at us? (Come to the September meeting for advice.) Knowing the skill
and enthusiasm of our members we will.

Hello and welcome to the Autumn edition of Over the Fence for 2023. It has
been another year of hard work by members of the committee to not only keep
the club running but to make sure that an interesting programme will be
available for 23/24. There has been an increase in membership and some new
and enthusiastic members of the committee. Please speak to David if you would
like to join the committee as new members are most welcome. Ask your friends
and neighbours to join.

After a good start in July 2021 with the Open Garden, and then managing three meetings, we had thought that we would be up and running. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the December meeting, which was a shame, as Jim had managed to book someone after we decided it might be difficult having a Christmas party. We also had to cancel in January but now the COVID restrictions have ended, and people will feel less worried about mixing with people.

Here is a message from our President!
Dear Fellow Gardeners If our gardens aren’t looking good this summer, they really ought to be –
what with all the time we’ve been obliged (!) to spend locked down in them,
some wonderful weather, and a magnificent growing and flowering season!

Introduction:
Hello everybody,
‘Welcome, to the Autumn edition of Over the Fence!’ We hope that you enjoyed your summer and are already planning next year’s fruit, vegetables and flowers. (Ready for the Annual Show 2020) Autumn is the time to enjoy seed catalogues and look for interesting bulbs. The weather was different again this year seeds seemed to be slow to germinate.

Dymock Daffodils
‘And the Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere;
And each flower and herb on Earth’s dark breast,
Rose from the dreams of its wintry rest.’
Percy Bysshe Shelley, ‘The Sensitive Plant’
I don’t know about your wintry rest, but I am really pleased to see Spring! I hope that your sensitive plants have survived the winter and
you are able to take part in this year’s Annual Show. This year it will be on Saturday 31st August, when we hope to see your vegetables, fruits, flowers, photographs and craft items.
